Installing engine in 91, need answers?

We are replacing the engine in my 91 XJ (4.0L and an AW4). The problem is it simply doesn't want to line up with the mounts. Left to right in the engine bay doesn't seem to be correct. It's almost like the block (from a 96 ZJ) is too wide or the brackets (swapped from the original 91 block) are wrong. It appears as if it's off by about an inch or so. Any thoughts?

The motor mounts are brand new, everything is stock.

Are you bolting the mounts on to the engine first, including the cross bolt, and then setting the mounts DOWN to the frame rail?
Or, are you trying to get the engine brackets down over the installed motor mounts.

I just dropped a '96 zj in my '99 xj. Had existing after market mounts. Mounted the engine side tight and left the others loose. Took some wiggling but went in rather easily, all things considered.
