what better, cv joint front end or u joint

What I would do, find late model XJ front shafts, swap in Spicer 760x joints. Swap those into your axle with new unit bearings. And keep your stockers/old unit bearings as spares.

CV axles are a little smoother in operation, but do not last as long. U-joints are stronger and last longer. RCV would be excessive overkill.

when you say not last along, what does that mean time wise, I just curious.. cuz if the boot is good and no load on them , not sure why they would wear.

Because it seems like the boots always tear which leads to quick failure if not fixed.
