How many u-joints, 1995 XJ 4x4?

I am sure this is a dumb question and I think I know the answer, but I figured I would ask the experts. So how many? Going to replace them all. Any suggestions on brand? Part numbers?

Spicer.. I believe 153x? SYE or slip yoke shaft? Rear stock shaft will have 2. front shaft has 3. Your front axle shafts most likely use the 297x joints, which can be upgraded to 760x.

I'd like to see a clear, concise list for this too.

u joints are on my radar, I'd like to have them ordered and in hand before taking things apart.

Most people here will tell you to use Spicer joints. Personally I prefer greasable joints so I use Alloys on the axle and Spicer on the driveshafts.

For the axles: 95-up D30s use Spicer 5-760X joints. 89-95 with ABS also use 5-760X. All others came with 5-260X (smaller joints). Shafts from a later axle are a drop-in no-mod upgrade if you can find some (unsure how this also applies to the RENIX era ABS, if it had the passenger disco)

Front and rear driveshafts use 1310 u-joints. If you want to rebuild the CV joints you'll need more parts.

Thank you all for the help. I am about to make a 3k order from amazon and these will be included. I also am buying a plasma cutter, compressor, a bunch of air tools, a nice 350 piece mechanics tool set, two light bars with wiring, as well as a bunch of other goodies.

The 760X joints will not fit in your axles unless you have ABS in the front. If you do not have ABS you need the smaller 297 Joint. 96-01 all have the larger 760 joint.

plus 1 extra of each -- you might break a needle bearing during install (sucks having to wait for another) and best case scenario you'll have an emergency trail spare

For the 1310, Spicer has two greasable options: 5-1310-1X has a single greasable cap with a clearance clip, and 5-153X has a grease fitting on the shoulder but you have to get low-profile zerk fittings to use them in the CV joint (http://www.mcmaster.com/#10595k14/=w4u7x6). I like the 5-153X better. You have to disconnect the transfer case side to reach the fittings with a needle tip but that is necessary to grease the centering ball anyway.

For greaseable center yokes Spicer 211544X and seal Spicer 286418.

There is a better option than the 5-153X if you want greaseable... the 5-1310X-1. Has a grease zerk in one of the caps and a stronger cross, more like the 5-1310X than the 5-153X. They are also more expensive.

I use non-greaseable for all because I have had extremely long life out of the non-greaseable Spicer parts.

Ok. So this isn't OEM anymore. But how about some information on how to identify exactly what u joints you have? I have a TW drive shaft, replaced front D30 from who knows and alloy front shafts.

I'd like to order replacements prior to dis assembly in order to reduce down time.

If you have alloy shafts, chances are they are 760x joints. For the TW shaft, I would contact them about that.

My answer is probably in this thread somewhere, but I'll be darned if I can find it... I have been looking into changing my axle, front and rear drive shaft u-joints but did't know how many to get. I saw in this thread that "I need to pick up (2) 5-760X and (5)1310 joints?" plus extras of each. 7+ problem solved, yeah?
BUT, then I saw this spicer set that only comes with six
(http://www.jeep4x4center.com/spicer...erformance-universal-joint-spc-spl1014jk.html)

AND this graphic from the Dana website that shows 6 also.....(odd how only one is shown for the front axle, yeah?)
sorry, i couldn't paste the picture, so here is the link

Any Who, short story long, is the pack enough? How many do I actually need for a 99 sport, 4wd, auto, slip yoke, 4.0?

Thanks for your help,
Beau

I would guess that the kit does not include the additional joint for the CV?

http://www.amazon.com/forum/-/TxJ38T5G7QP3NU/ref=ask_dp_dpmw_al_hza?asin=B00EYBXV48 says it comes with 7 u-joints: 2 for the front axles, 3 for the front driveshaft, and 2 for the rear driveshaft
