The DC joint on my rear DS is chirping. It just started, and I've only driven about 10 miles since then. Can I drive a bit before fixing, or am I risking further damage? My XJ has a home made BB of about 3" and an SYE with a custom rear DS. I was able to narrow the noise to rear DS by having the rear tires on ice in 2wd, so the front shaft wasn't turning. Winter is good for something.

I would stop and replace the ujoint NOW.
If it's chirping, its dry, and there's no telling when it will come apart.

It's the ball joint that's up towards the SYE. Drop the shaft and flex the joint.
There's a grease port in the ball joint, you'll need a needle adapter for that type fitting.
Should be able to find the adapter at napa.

What others have said... angry sparrows... need grease. I grease front and rear drive shafts every oil change to keep the birds away. Bit of a pain as I have to pull the CV end off from the transfer-case to get to the grease fitting. Might be overkill but I know they are in good shape.

for the amount of work it takes to get in there and add grease I would recommend buying a CV repair kit and installing that while in there and still packing it with grease. Its not a difficult job by any means....but it just takes a while. and more than likely if you've lost all the grease youve started to wear that ball out

best to just disconnect the shaft and grease everything you can, trying to avoid the work just doubles the amount of time
