NP231/NP242 front output shaft play?

The front output shaft on both my 01 XJ NP231 and 97 XJ NP242 has some slop. Both yokes are tight. The slop is from where the bearing moves around slightly in the case. I have taken the 242 apart and changed the bearing. The bearing needs to be tapped in. When I was tapping in the seal, I had not put the snap ring in to hold the bearing and the bearing actually fell out. I am wondering if NEW transfer cases are like this or should the output shaft have zero play in any direction? Should the bearing be set with something to hold it in place? Is there an oversized bearing that should be used? Does the front half of the case need to be replaced?

Thanks!
