Tonight after work I am planning on opening the differential up one late 96 Cherokee 4.0. When I get the diff cover off, will there be a way for me to see the splines to tell which axel I have?

Not really. You need to pull an axleshaft and count to be sure.

The cross pin retention bolt is a 5/16 head, use a 6 point wrench only on it. If you get unlucky it will break off a few threads down into the carrier, that has happened to me twice in the last year though I work on an above average number of differentials.
