Steering Columns

My jeep was stolen last week, and they broke my steering column open.

I have a 92 4.0 with ax-15. What I'm curious about is the interchange of steering columns. How would I rig up an auto tranny column if I can't find another one from a manual? Or what other vehicles does the 92 cherokee manual column come in?

not too sure about year interchangability, but the column is the same between manual and auto trans because they are both floor shiters. the shifter interlock is on the brake pedal, not in the steering column.

So how would one rig up a release if I grabbed an auto? One guy on cherokee forum did it but there's no details. And I'm having trouble finding one from a manual.

you do realize that the automatic isnt a column shifter right?

A release for what? If you have a manual trans what would stop you from shifting gears?

Column shift models were available but not common.

i thought those were export-only, so i didnt want to confuse the issue any more than it is by mentioning it.

The key release. On mine, I have a little tab I need to push down to release my key. On an auto, you can usually only pull the key out in park.
