When manually shifting the transfer case underneath the jeep (np231) when the shift arm is as far back as possible (towards the rear) what gear should that be?

From underneath the heep?

Yes. From what I recall, the linkage is designed in such a way that when the handle inside the Jeep is pushed forward, the lever on the tcase is also pushed forward. When the handle inside is pulled back, the lever on the tcase goes to the rear.

Moving the range lever on the T-Case itself, forward/up is 2wd and rearward/down is 4-low.

So I guess I have a problem, all the way down is 4hi and up one click is 2wd... I did sye before this happened so I am guessing I misaligned something in there.
