i got a 1989 cherokee limited, 4.0/aw4/242j... up untill yesterday i though the rear axle was a dana 44 from the issues i had when rebuilding the brakes last year. but after cleaning some rust off and seeing some stampings i am really confused now... i can find no sign of a bom number on the tubes, and none of the stampings are where they should be...

can anyone with experience tell me what i got, i am all kind of confused.

35c?
My guess is Dana 35c clip

35c were custom application axles. which could explain having 44 brakes... and i guess from looking at the diff cover it is a 35, most likely a 35c... wonder what suprises i will find inside...

yeah thats definitely a 35

35c does mean custom, but custom doesn't mean custom fit. It means it just wasn't assembled till it reached the jeep plant instead of Dana/Spicer assembling it before shipping.

That is definitely a dana 35 - and btw, threaded or rubber fill plug means absolutely nothing, it's not a reliable indicator of anything.

edit: 35c also has nothing to do with c clips - another common misconception. I forget what the year break on c clip 35s was, but most RENIX and earlier are non c clip, I believe all HO era came factory with c clips. I believe the split was 89 to 90 or 90 to 91, but not sure.

My 1990 Limited had C-clips.

You can always tell a 44--the rear cover looks like an apple laying on its side.

The Chrysler 8.25 looks like a rhino at the pinion nut end.

No, it just has the larger brakes that were available for some years. There's nothing dana 44 or dana 35 about those brakes, they fit both AFAIK.

It aint custom, sorry.

this.

the brakes are the same.

I was lead to beleive that the C at the end of D35c meant chrysler, because dana sent just the Dif to chrysler who put their own tubes and brakes on.

Yup, ignore the bom and casting numbers, it's much easier to just look at the thing, compare to the infograms floating around the Internet and be done with it.

As far as the d35c meaning Chrysler, I don't think that is the case as my 90 xj had a d35c, and it was still AMC at that point.

probably right... just something I was told a while back.

anyone know what the fluid capacity is in a d35 and a d30? i wanna open up both diffs this week and put in new fluid. i read i should use 80w/90 gear lube, just not sure how much to get.

around 2qt each iirc, I just buy 4 and fill em till it comes back out.

Any gear oil with the GL5 rating is good enough. I buy cheap and use the pump that is sold seperately. Also, verify that you are not running a limited slip differential. If you do have a LS, you need to purchase the friction modifier.

If you soak the bottle in a bucket of HOT water, the oil is much easier to pump. ;)
