everything i've read leads me to think this should be my knock sensor, but it doesnt look even close the the picture of a new one... input please.

I think that may be the knock sensor.
Not 100% tho.
 
That's what's left of a knock sensor. Much of the outter shell is missing. In fact, a closer look and I see the shell still attached to the harness.
 
Side note...... The replacement will not look the same at all. The new one will have a bolt that goes though it to bolt it to the block.
 
I heard they discontinued the old style knock sensor and redesigned it.
 
renix knock sensor. junkyard or they make a newer style , but they usually arent cheap.
 
MAKE SURE TO TORQUE THE NEW KNOCK SENSOR.

Mine has looked like that now for about 5 years.I have noticed no change in the performance of my jeep at all. It doesn't knock or anything and still gets me about 20MPG.
