No reverse in my 98 cherokee xj 2wd?

I picked up a cheap 2wd 98 cherokee with 4.0 and auto knowing reverse did not funtion, Thinging it was a linkage issue or selonoid(check engine light). Once I got it home I checked the linkage and it appears to be functioning and the reverse lights come on when in reverse. I moved the gear selector through all the gears and reverse is nowhere to be found. I checked the engine codes and it came up with some pretty generic codes all related to tranny including slenoid b issue? I then realized reverse does not have a selonoid that could go bad??Correct? So is reverse band toast?

Did you check the fluid??
