Wich stock replacement springs? HD or not??

About to order some stock height springs/shocks for my saggy rear 99 XJ. I have a full size spare on a steel wheel and keep a toolbox in the back. I also load it up to go camping at times. I don't have a winch or cool bumper on the front. Any suggestions on springs/shocks?

This is what I was thinking about getting.

I have no idea on the shocks!

Any shocks that fit will work. Monroe Sensatrac give good ride and control.

Usually, HD springs from Crown add about 1" of lift. Load Rating 675 springs would be considered normal for a 4x4 4.0L XJ.

Does anyone know the front coil spring's OEM load rating?
I'm trying to add some beef to the rear spring back and might wind up replacing front coils to match, but want to make sure I get the right coil up front.

NICE INFO!

I personally would go with the heavier end, I know it doesn't seem like you carry a lot, but it does add up when camping, etc. Plus if you ever decide to tow a smaller trailer it will ride very nice. You could always go with an air shock too, but they never seem to last more than a couple years for me.

Coil Springs:
BDS 3" XJ coil 240lbs/inch

RE 3.5" XJ coil 241 lbs/inch
RE 4.5" XJ coil 169 lbs/inch
RE 5.5" XJ coil 185 lbs/inch
RE 4.5" ZJ coils are 240 lb/in. give 5.5" ish of lift on an XJ ???

Rustys 3" XJ standard coil 150 lbs/inch
Rustys 3" XJ Heavy Duty coil 180 lbs/inch
Rustsy 4.5" XJ coil 150 lbs/inch
Rustsy 6.5" XJ coil 150 lbs/inch
Rustys 9" XJ coil 180 lbs/inch

OME 930 XJ coil 160 lbs/inch ~2"
OME 934 ZJ coil 180 lbs/inch
Old Man Emu coil springs (A)= Driver side (B)= Passenger side

DPGXJ5 DPG Trailgunner 5" coils = 198lbs/in.

Rockkrawler 6.5" are 165 lbs/in

Rancho 3" coils, at least the old coils give about 2 1/4" of lift on an XJ and have a very high 235 lb/in rate.

Sky Jacker 3" ZJ coils 218 lbs/in ~4" on a XJ

OEM XJ is allegedly 147 lb/in rate.

OEM ZJ with 4.0 is supposedly 190 lb/in rate front and rear.

Tera 4" TJ coils give 4.5" of lift on an XJ and have a 200 lb/in rate , 20.25" tall unloaded
Tera 3" TJ coils give 3.5" of lift on an XJ and have a 170 lb/in rate

I put the HD Crown springs in my XJ back in 2008 (along with a 2" budget lift). It sure gave the rear end a nice little boost, but now 4-years later and with a Rusty's skid plate and Rock Rails/Sliders, it looks like the rear might be sagging a bit below the front ride height. The rear suspension is also much stiffer than the front. If I had it to do over again I would go for a set of OME rear leafs. OME makes leaf springs at normal ride and and with a bit of lift if you want.

That eBay listing for "Front XJ Leaf" springs looks a little suspicious! Have you tried looking at getting these from Quadratec or 4WD Hardware? Also, are you looking at swapping out the front coils as well? Unless they are cracked or broken, they should be fine, coils hold up much better than leafs do over time...

For the price, OME takes it for sure.

These are the springs I put in my XJ 4-years ago, only paid $89 (each) for them! Like I said, I wouldn't go with them if I had to do it all over again.

Tim, this is some great info, but now you got me thinkin and I have a few questions:

- I see you listed the spring rates for the OME coils, do you have any data on OME Leafs?
- Do you know why OME has a "Right" and "Left" coil spring?
- Is measuring the "free arch" as simple as laying the spring upsidedown on the concrete and measuring from the floor to the top of the arch?
- What's the difference between the GK & GL Factory Coils? Do you know the spring rates on these two?
- The load rating data you list is great. Why do you think Jeep had so many options for Leafs? 3 SD and 5 HD versions, this seems like a bit much. I'd be curious to know Jeeps methodology on when they would use the LB up through the LT. It would also be interesting to know the free arch/load ratings for their Standard Duty leafs.
- I see Crown and the Dealer classify LL & LN differently on Standard vs. Heavy Duty.

Much of the info was gather from other forums and other threads. Some was gathered and confirmed at the local junkyards.

No first hand experience with OME, contacting them may be a good idea.

- Is measuring the "free arch" as simple as laying the spring upside down on the concrete and measuring from the floor to the top of the arch?

Free Arch is how much arch is in a leaf spring when there is no load on the spring. To check the Free Arch draw a line through the center of the spring eyes. Then measure from that line to the top of the main plate (the leaf with the eyes) next to the center bolt. This measurement can be positive or negative. Measuring free arch by placing the spring upside down on the eyes on a floor and measuring upward is unacceptable. Leaf thickness, different eye sizes, distorted eyes, twisted eyes, uneven floor, and etc. can and will lead to an inaccurate measurement.

- What's the difference between the GK & GL Factory Coils? Do you know the spring rates on these two?

G code coil springs are UpCountry. K and L may be left/right. I have never found a reason for the codes and doubt that it really matters. Stock height coil springs also have similar but different codes that usually were FF,FJ, FH.

The load rating data you list is great. Why do you think Jeep had so many options for Leafs? 3 SD and 5 HD versions, this seems like a bit much. I'd be curious to know Jeeps methodology on when they would use the LB up through the LT.

To allow for the different options. 2wd/4wd, 4cyl/6cyl, tow package, etc. A 2wd 4cyl will weigh a lot less than a 4wd 6 cyl with tow pkg.

Thanks, all good info.

My old stock springs were stamped "RPN706AB" and their free-arch was ~6.75" (after 10 years of use). I'm assuming these are the 52000706AB springs? If so, then they would be LN's, but I haven't found much data on these. My XJ from the factory was 4.0L, 4x4, AW4, Tow Package, Full-Size Spare, HD Cooling.

My new Crown springs are LS (4886185), which depending which source you look at have a free arch of 6.000"-6.375". Kinda funny my new springs had less free-arch from the get go, but they did boost the rear up some. I'm not sure what the difference between the two would be.

Here is one retailer that lists the free-arch for each spring:
http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-suspension-parts/84-01-cherokee-xj.htm#16

I'll see what I can learn from OME...

I just swapped out the coils on my 97 for ZJ V8 coils and OME leafs. The rear gained 2" the front about an inch.
