..on description from a CL ad for a potential new Jeep : "I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. The car runs and starts but when it comes to a stop it turns off but it starts back up.."

There is no other mechanical / trim detail info available in ad..

Could be a lot of things ranging from a marginal battery to a thermal failure of an engine management sensor, to ??? Very difficult to speculate, but one of the more common ones is a marginal battery. And yes, you can have a battery strong enough to start the engine, but marginal enough to give the engine management system fits and create stalling. A simple load test of the battery would tell the story on that component.

But if you look at it and it is otherwise solid, the problem usually is not that hard to isolate. You definitely could use the symptom though to negotiate a lower price.
