Anyone know if I can easily install a fuel tank and fuel pump from a '96 into a '98?

it will physically fit.. but the pumps and pickups are very different

Will it work if I swap in the pump and pickup from the '96 along with the tank?

The 96 have a higher pressure 1 line returnless fuel system (unlike any other year) and a steel tank. The 98 has a 2 fuel lines to and from the engine compartment and a plastic fuel tank. You will probably better off looking at XJs 97 and up.

The simple answer is no you can't.
1997-2001 have a plastic gas tank, in-tank fuel pump, and one single fuel line (no return to tank).
1996 has a steel gas tank. There are no substitutes or simple interchanges with other years for the 1996 fuel pump.
