Xj auto to stick transmission swap

well... bolt in the manual transmission, and depending on the year of your XJ you can leave the ecu or you have to buy a new one. you will need a different length driveshaft and of course the pedal assembly

other than all that its pretty simple

I cant give you any more specifics because you didnt provide us with the year XJ

What if you wanted to do this swap on a 98, is it still pretty straight forward? and how much do you think it would cost? Also how long would it take, unfortunately it is also a daily driver.

running fine and throwing tranny codes are different animals with the swap

bolt the new tranny with manual driveshaft and pedals and drive into the frozen tundra

did you have to fool it with resistors or anything?
my mustang needed something in the shift selenoid circuit so it wouldnt throw a CEL.

I don't know if its throwing any CEL's as my stock dash is missing......She runs and drives good though:D.

You have to take one of these (http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&hl=en&biw=1360&bih=677&tbm=isch&tbnid=-K1SEJYV663WBM:&imgrefurl=http://www.aapexonline.com/wire-terminals/male-female-disconnectors/18-22-awg-push-on-female-spade-crimp-terminal.html&docid=sUGrxsjRA1zQCM&imgurl=http://www.aapexonline.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/320x400/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/r/f/rf250.jpg&w=320&h=400&ei=OIesT6eGDIrA0AG4raSwBA&zoom=1&iact=hc&dur=91&sig=101376225387646403905&page=1&tbnh=153&tbnw=121&start=0&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0,i:86&tx=110&ty=118&vpx=180&vpy=179&hovh=251&hovw=201)

and jump two pins on one of the connectors under the hood to make the computer think that the auto tranny is in park/neutral otherwise it wont crank over.

You also have to transfer over the master and slave cylinder for the clutch pedal. You have to take a hole saw or big step drill and actually drill the holes in your firewall for the clutch master cylinder. I HIGHLY!!!! recommend getting a external vs internal slave cylinder style bellhousing. I've had both, and the internal blows! You might have issues with your transmission mount and the transmission crossmember mount and how it bolts to the frame. I kinda did a custom thing with mine.

when i converted my mustang, i wired the park neutral switch circuit into the clutch safety switch. worked great, i assume it would for the xj as well.

There are a few things to keep in mind. On a 97 and later it will set the CEL if you don't trick it into thinking there is still a transmission present, on a 97 this is pretty easy, on a 98-01 it's more difficult. You will need to either jump the P/N pin positions in the NSS connector or connect them to the clutch safety switch (there is one on some years, at least there was on the 99 2dr 2wd XJ I pulled my donor late model pedal assembly and master cyl out of) and also connect the reverse light switch on the transmission to the reverse switch pins on the NSS connector. You will have to replace your driveshafts or have them shortened and lengthened.

I have heard that you can simply have a manual XJ firmware image written to the ECU to solve the CEL issue but have not verified this, as I haven't found anyone willing to write the "wrong" firmware to an ECU for me.

If your running a stock 97-99 or 00-01 xj you need... ecm, clutch hydraulics, metal plate that sits behind flywheel, flywheel/clutch assembly, pilot bushing and bearing, trans with clutch fork, crossmember, both driveshafts, 4x4 linkage and brackets, there is a plate that sits on the tranny tunnel for the shifter, upper and lower shift boot, pedal assembly... I have 5speed swapped a 99 xj and sold swap kits to several friends and own a 2000 xj that was swapped, with simple wiring you can get your reverse lights to work and trick the Jeep to the the nss is still there oh and unplug the tcm if more details needed pm me

Don't forget to get the right pilot bearing to put in the end of the crankshaft.
