I'm in the midst of replacing the head gasket on my '89 XJ. I chased the the threads on the head bolts, and found that about two inches into the thread, the shank seems to narrow. Is it time for new bolts, even though it's not a race engine?

Its stretched. Time for new bolts.

X@, you need new bolts. They can only be reused once, if at all.

try headbolts.com on line, only place I could find Renix head bolts.

late model bolts will work in the Renix as well, IIRC. They have the studs on top of them for the new style valve cover gasket, but they work fine for any of the 4.0L engines.
