Setting up the 4.56's in my XJ. Its a set of new Motive gears and install kits. The new pinion has 2.261 etched on it, the old slinger was .060 and the baffle was .018, new slinger was .030, baffle was .018 and i added .030 to make up for the old slinger and .010 make up for new pinion, backlash is set at .005 which took 3 trys. heres the pics

Yeah, you need to pull some shims out from behind the pinion. Is this your first time doing gears?

Just be patient. You are probably going to have to re-do everything at least 10-15 more times. If you get lazy, you will end up doing it another 10-15 times AFTER you blow the first one up!

Here's a recent thread with some pictures of how it should end up: http://naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1076475

took out .022 of pinion shim, i have the BL set at .005, im gonna pull .002 from the RGS and open it up just a hair tomorrow morn

You're much closer, but you still need to pull a few more thousandths out from behind the pinion. The markings on the ring gear should be nearly oval. Right now you can see that there is a sharp cutoff in the pattern on the inside of the gear. That means your pinion is too close to the ring gear.

Here's the final patterns on the rear

And the front. Took 10-12 tries, went as shallow as .068" and settled with .073" and .006 BL. The coast pattern at .071" was perfect but the drive showed a bit shallow with .006 BL. Did a quick road test in and out of 4wd and checked for leaks and let it cool outside for an hour then drove home. Quiet, just a little more drivetrain noise due to the increase in drive train rpm. The bad cel phone pics don't show much but the pinion wiped the crown fairly clean right in the middle of the gear. I was uneasy about how it would turn out but I'm pleased with the results.

+1 on a little deep, but you'll be fine. Nice work!

Porch951 are you just saying that to make me feel better or you have nothing nice to say LOL. I did the best i could with what i had (note to self and others get a GOOD shim pack kit with smaller shims .001"-.005"), the .003" differance between too much PD and to little is unreal, i wish i could have fine tuned it better, i was just pleased when i presses my side bearings and large pinion outter race on my pattern and and BL remianed the same. the rear im still un easy about, but it will be the first to go if it is set up incorrectly, if it needs a rebuild due to poor set up i will be better prepaired to spend more time and have a better slection of shims and a back up pinion bearing. Thanks for your help Porch. IF my pinion depth is TOO deep what are the side affects of it.

Nah, you'll be fine! Assuming you did everything else correctly and the pattern is the only "problem", you might end up with a little bit of whining.

no whining yet, but ill make that call long after there broken in and been put to the test 4wheeling. Im very confident in the rest of the install both front and rear. Ill try to remember to update this thread if anything happens.

question for porch951 or any other gear expert, slightly off topic. if a vehicle develops whine after about 22 years, not when coasting but under acceleration, is it something to worry about? I had a wheel bearing go bad in my chevy, the rollers all fell into the axle tube and the metal on metal grinding turned the gear oil a metallic grey color, not to mention there was very little oil left. i've been driving and towing with it since then (fixed the bearing and changed fluid), but it's always a thought in my mind when i'm pulling the heep up a big hill. i'm guessing somehow the gear mesh changed, but nothing looked noticably bad when i poped the cover off so i dont think anything's in too bad of shape.

I had something similar happen once, a bolt backed out of the ring gear and went through the cover and all the oil was gone before i could get to a stopping point. But as for longevity of something like that...i really have no idea, sorry! I would think you'd be fine except for the whining, but it's hard to say!

With all of that metal in the oil it wore some metal off of the ring and pinion and changed the gear mesh. If you thoroughly flush out the gearbox, replace all of the bearings and put it back together with strong magnets in the diff cover (I have some for you) it will probably last a long time but it will whine alot.
