A/C has not worked in 10 years, so would removing it help keep my XJ cooler. I'm thinking it would allow more air flow.

yes, it helps. you can also de-clutter your engine bay, and go OBA

There are write-ups around regarding converting the AC compressor to an OBA compressor... I plan on doing it sometime.
