Simple u-joint question on q 97 xj

I have an AA sye on my 97 xj, and Im looking to replace my drive shaft u joints. I will get to the axels when it becomes nicer out.

Here are the questions:

1. The rear drive shaft takes the Spicer 5-153x or 5-785's right?
2. Is it the same u joints for the front as it is for the rear?
3. The axels take 760s correct?

4. Looks like they are doing away with the sealed non-grease-able 5-785x ( http://www.northerndrivetrain.com/product/SPI-5-785X.html ) But under parts that are alternatives it says that I can use the 1310x in place of it?

1. 5-153x
2. Yes
3. On your 97, yes
4. A 5-153x is a 1310. 5-153x is the part number. 1310 is the series number. So all 5-153x u-joints are 1310s. But not all 1310s are 5-153x. ;)

-edit- Just looked at that website. I guess there is a 5-1310x u-joint. I stand corrected. It seems confusing to use "1310" as the series number AND the part number.

Here's a link to the Dana/Spicer K350 U-Joint Applications Catalog:

http://www2.dana.com/expertforms/dek350.aspx

Just enter JEEP, Jeep Cherokee Compact (XJ), and year. It will give you a list of the driveshaft U-Joints for your XJ.

Here's a link to the Dana/Spicer distributor locator in your area:

http://www.spicerparts.com/order.asp

In the Market and Product window select Driveshaft-Light Duty. Then enter the info required to find a distributor in your area. You can contact them about the discontinuation of the SPL U-Joints that you mentioned.

If the above links don't open for you just copy and paste them in your browser window.

I, like johnyc, went to that website you reference and I think they are wrong on two counts: 1. It's not "SPI" it's "SPL", meaning Spicer Life (series) U-Joints. 2. Like johnyc said, 1310 is a series, not a part number. I don't trust most internet providers like this and try to go to the manufacturer's site and/or their distributors for the real info.

My preference is to go with the non-greaseable U-Joints. The way I look at it is new Spicer non-greaseable U-Joints will outlive my XJ by a long margin (it's a '99) so why fool with greaseable joints. My original Spicer U-Joints lasted over 12 years and 133,000 miles.

Just replaced my rear driveshaft U-Joints, and front axle U-Joints with Spicer. Front drveshaft is next (as preventive maintenance).
