We made a ton of those in my Boy Scout days. On the more modern side, I just put my pre-order in for a BioLite camp stove:

About the size of a Nalgene, uses wood and similar easily attainable solid fuel, and the big bonus - generates a bit of electricity from the heat which powers the fan to feed it oxygen, as well as the ability to charge your phone or other small electronic device.
I'm pretty interested in the larger version as well, would be great for non-backpacking/car camping outings.
