popping out of 4low

It's a 97 XJ 5spdAX NP231 with SYE

I bought this jeep a few months ago and built a 4.6 for it because it needed an engine. Ever since i have tried to put it in 4low it pops out and goes into neutral and hear a slight clicking noise in the tcase like it wants to go into gear but it just does not. Me and a couple friends have all tried to adjust the linkage but no matter what we do it still pops out. Then when i try to put it back in 2wd the handle does not want to go down. Then i will finally get it back in 2wd and it drives and everything seems fine. 4wheel high works great but the same thing happens over and over if i put it back in 4low.

Does this sound like the shift fork is messed up or something else?

Disconnect the linkage from the case. It is only one bolt on the tcase.
Use a channel lock and manually turn the "knob" on the side of the case.
It's not really a knob but it's where the linkage bolts to the case.
There is a flat peice of steel bolted to what I called a knob.

Anyway, turn it from 2hi to 4hi then 4lo until it doesn't turn anymore.
You will have to lay under the Jeep to do this.

Drive it and see if it stays in or pops out.
If it stays in it is your linkage.
If it pops out it isn't the linkage.
Good luck,
Stukboy

How about checking all your mounts!
