Used lock right missing spacer washers

I just got around to pulling my used lockright out of the carrier it came in and noticed that it seems to be missing the spacer washers. I guess they are supposed to look like the third piece from the left in this pic: http://www.jeepaholics.com/tech/lrhubs/P9250829.JPG

Ive never messed with a lunchbox locker before so I dont know for sure that I even need the washers. One of the pins was also broken in half and the cross pin has some damage so I wonder if either were caused by not having the spacer washers in there.

I was hoping to install this locker today or tomorrow but if the washers are essential in a dana 30 application then I'll wait and contact richmond gear on monday.

Yes,you need the spacers.

Yes,you need the spacers.

The previous owner just told me the locker was in his jeep when he bought it and that it worked fine for the past 2 years. It started slipping so he checked the teeth and they looked fine so he bought the spring/pin kit, but never got around to installing them b/c hes going to tons and sold it to me.

So it sounds like it can work without the spacer washers but can cause excess wear and break parts. I will call Richmond tom. If they wont sell the spacer washers by themselves or not at a reasonable price, does anyone have some sitting around from an old lockright they would sell me?

According to a tech at Richmond, the Dana 30 does not need the step washers, but a Dana 35 does:

"By the p/n`s you have given, this is a locker for Dana 30 front axle. P/N 2210-LR. But. The stepped washer is not part of the components used in a Dana 30 application. The only parts needed for assem. in this Dana 30 would be the CAL, DHB and the SAK. If someone had these stepped washers installed they should not have been."

e said the locker in the pic is for a Dana 35: http://www.jeepaholics.com/tech/lrhubs/P9250829.JPG

Yet, the write up that the picture is from is about locking a Dana 30: http://www.jeepaholics.com/tech/lrhubs/default.htm

Maybe an older version of the Dana 30 lockright came with step washers? The writeup is from 2001.

I'm going to install mine without the washers unless anyone here protests.

I've had a bunch of lockers over the years and don't usually have left over or not needed parts.
My first question is what is the locker out of?
Then I know your putting it in a 30.
Third,, wear on the cross shaft is normal but it shouldnt be worn a lot because it's hardened.
If the small pins are broken be careful and check the large pieces for damage.
Those step washers and to keep things tight inside the carrier. The instructions say you need them.
I would not recommend not putting them in.
It could save you a lot of money down the road.
