im in the process of installing 4.88 gears on a dana 30 but noticed that it doesnt have any carrier shims?? is this common? its a 1997' xj. thanks.

On the carrier they're under the bearings (towards the inside of the carrier, not the outside). I think mine took about .075 worth of shims...

If it has a selectable locker it might have a spacer on the outside of the bearing cups but as was said a standard high pinion 30 has the shims between the bearing and the carrier.
