Good luck, most XJs here in the states don't have ABS. Sorry I don't have much info to add, but here is a bump for your thread.

Get in Jeep, do not start the engine. Put your foot on brake, should be hard. Start engine. Pedal should go down maybe 2" and firm up, vacuum to booster working (so booster IS working)

If always mushy brakes, and you know your hardware is all good, and you know that you've bled all the brakes, suspect the Master Cylinder. If you have to replace it make sure to follow bench bleeding procedure.

Have you changed brake pads/calipers lately?

Search "ABS delete" or similar terms.

the ABS on early XJ's does not have a vacuum booster. so that whole booster test with the engine off doesnt work here. the ABS on these is super funky. the pressure is supplied by an electric pump and the M/C and into a accumulator/modulator where the fluid is split to the correct wheels. i just got rid of all this crap on my 90.

to stefano, i assume it will be hard, and very expensive to have the current ABS equipment fixed, as it is here. i, and many others will recommend that you get rid of the ABS system all together and install a conventional brake system utilizing a vacuum booster and master cylinder. the easiest would to but parts for a '90. but there are many worthwhile upgrades that are easy for one who is somewhat handy with a wrench. there are many threads about this very subject.

From DJ this info may help
From Google search (1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ ABS Brake lifetime warranty or recall).
Phone# and more helpful info on this site.

If you have the same Bendix system that was on the 1988 to 1990 Limited. It has a separate pump on the passenger side and hose running to the master cylinder on the drivers side with a large round accumulator. Each time the ignition is on and you pump the brake a few times, you should hear the pump come on for a few seconds.
If you have this system, and the jeep dealer will not help, there is a help line directly to Chrysler via phone or email. Go to their site. Have had this system replaced three times on my 1990.

Thanks to all for reply. The last week end I dont have open the hood of my xj..... but the electric pump work regular, no stall on all week end. I must do something. I do no longer trust of my brake system!!!! I havent recently replaced pads or shoes.

Yes, I have this system:

The early 88-91 ABS system is just plain garbage. Its unreliable and unsafe. Don't get another used unit, just get rid of it and go w/ non-abs brakes. You will need a new master cylinder and booster (1995+) and some lines.

well, I made a decision: throw away the ABS!! wath's the right MC and booster (grand cherokee or xj??? what's year), I dont would like change also the brake pedal. I read many thread about this project and I'm confused.... Rimeber that I live in italy and is not like in USA. Is not so easy or cheaply find the parts. I think to buy the parts on ebay (remanufactered part Cardone brand). someone can tell me the part#???

Good decision. While you may wish to keep the ABS there is simply no good way to do it on your XJ.

In short what you need is a 96+ XJ master cylinder, booster, booster spacer, and pedal. Remove the old crap, install the new parts and run the lines. You could do with a WJ assembly but you would need to do some fab work on it. Search on here to find similar threads. Here are some to get you started:

because on ebay I've found more or less all parts from sellers that can ship to italy...
but I don't know where I can found the spacer and new prop valve.
in summary I think that for do a good job I need:
96+ XJ master cylinder,
booster,
booster spacer,
pedal,
and prop. valve (for dual diagram system).
Correct?
thanks to all, and excuse me again for my english....
