Linkage or Transmission Problem

I have a 97' Jeep Grand Cherokee TSI with the 5.2 liter motor. Recently reverse has stopped working and it bucks wildly when shifting gears. Like it is slipping into nuetral before remebering it needs to go the next gear, then slamming in all of a sudden. I was told this could be the linkage or I may need to replace the whole transmision. How can I figure out which it is.

When I put it in reverse it will move at a snails pace and it is completely underpowered. It won't roll up any kind of incline or even make it over a speed bump. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
