8.25 - Aussie Locker install question - backlash

Installing an Aussie in my 8.25 w/ stock gearing. To start the install I removed the carrier from the axle. I later learned that you don't have to remove the carrier for install. Now, I have everything installed, clearances checked and just need to torque everything down.

What I'm wondering is that since I removed the carrier from axle do I have to reset my backlash? Since the 8.25 has threaded adjusting nuts on either side of the carrier does your backlash change by removing the carrier and not lining the nuts up how they were before when re-installing?

Yes you have to reset the backlash IAW the FSM instructions.

What does this mean?

Also, I did not measure backlash before I removed the carrier so using the tolerances for new gears wouldn't work. Is there a range I should shoot for?

Should be fine, You can measure it if you want, you will need a dial indicator, spec is .006 to .008".

In accordance with the Factory Service Manual.

There's no way to predict what the backlash was before you took it apart but I think you should shoot for .010".

throw it back together. you'll be fine

I have seen this too, how is the Aussie different than others that it is not required? Do you have any install pics? About to do this week thanks

Your just replacing the spider gears, due to the c-clip axle shafts it must be done with the carrier installed.
