So I found an XJ 4cyl Auto ....... did all 4cyl autos have 4.56s stock? and what axles are underneath this thing?
I didnt get a chance to look underneath it, just was cruz'n the yard and found it. I needed some parts from the motor for my Comanche, and then found this thread ..... http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1046035&highlight=cylinder+axle+options ....... and saw that 4.56s were offered.

I know the 8.25 was avail after 91ish? so would this thing have a 35, or 44 for a rear?

I was taking pix of the interior for a guy in the ComancheClub who wanted a black interior ...... then realized this thing was an auto .......

No, not all 4cyl auto's had 4:56. It seems that only the very rare 4cyl and AW4 automatic had that option. Not all 4cyl had the AW4 behind it, there was another automatic that was much more common. Believe it was a torqueflight something or other?

You'll have to eyeball the rear diff and trans to ID them, or read the diff tags/ring gear if still present for ratio.

this chart is what i used when i got my HP with stock 4.10's the other day.
it was correct but i did read the dif tag and look at the gears to be sure.

not sure if everything is right on this but i saw the cherokee with the V6, only one in the yard and saw it had a manual and it had the gears i needed. wanted to get 4.56's but couldnt find any axles with them good luck!

Front Axle
1984–1996: Dana 30, High Pinion, Reverse Cut, 27-spline axleshafts (1989 – 1995 : with ABS used 5-297x universal joints, non-ABS had 5-260x universal joints. Certain XJ models were produced with constant-velocity joints instead of universal joints.)
1996–1999: Dana 30, High Pinion, Reverse Cut, 297x/760 universal joint, 27-spline axleshafts.
2000–2001: Dana 30, Low Pinion, Standard Cut, 297x/760 universal joint, 27-spline axleshafts.
1985–2001: Straight non-driven front axle for two-wheel drive only.
[edit]Rear Axle
1984–1989: Dana 35, non c-clip, with anti-lock braking system (ABS) or non-ABS.
1990–1996: Dana 35, c-clip, ABS or non-ABS.
1997–2001: Dana 35, c-clip, ABS.
1991–1996: Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 27-spline axleshafts.
Late 1996–2001: Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 29-spline axleshafts.
1987–1990: Dana 44, non-abs, 30-spline axleshafts.
[edit]Axle Gear Ratios
Jeep XJs came in several standard gearing ratios:
3.07:1, manual transmission, I6 engine.
3.54:1, automatic transmission, I6 engine with Dana 44 rear differential.
3.54:1, manual transmission, I4 diesel engine with Dana 35 rear differential.
3.55:1, automatic transmission, I6, V6 engines; manual transmission, I4 engine.
3.73:1, automatic transmission, I6, Tow Package, UpCountry Package.
4.10:1, manual transmission, V6; automatic transmission, I4 engine.
4.56:1, automatic transmission, I4, offroad or tow package.

thats the same interior as my jeep, first time i have seen an xj with the same interior as mine and complete ha

not sure if everything is right on this
4.10:1, manual transmission, V6; automatic transmission, I4 engine.
At least one thing is wrong;
In my '96 4 cyl., Manual with 8.25 axle, the gears are 4.11, which I think is correct across most years.
IIRC, the auto trans 4's were geared more for "economy".

Little tidbit that doesnt mean much but here it is: Not all of the late years had ABS, My '01 with a D35 does not, and Im very glad!

Front diff says 3.54 on it ...... I'm bringing a jack to check the rear rear, rear's rear or what ever ...

hoping the dana 35 has a different tag and some swap took place, but we'll see ... course that means I have to now pop the covers and do some counting.

I'll check it again, when I look at the rear, I cant even imagine how bad it would roll from a start, you would certainly burn a lot of gas

I know its an old thread but for the benefit of those searching, I have seen two 4cyl autos at the junkyards. One was a 2wd with a D35 and 4.56 and the other had 4.11 gears.

Yes, unless something was swapped before it ended up there. ALL 4cyl XJ's came with a min. of 4.11s, then the rare AW4/4.56
