Quick Dana 60 question

Jeepxj5209

NAXJA Forum User
Looking into building dana 60's for my XJ
found a master list of every front Dana 60 ever build from factory
Under hub type there are 3 types
-external- normal locking hubs
-Unit bearing- not sure what that is
-Internal- most d60's have an internal system, is this refering to a vacumme system?

Note: These D60's with internal, a lot are in the 70's-80's didnt think they had an effective vacumme system back then, jusy wondering

Thanks

Looks like no one has a quick answer. :)

Sorry, don't have time right now to write a proper answer.

External locking hub is what most Dodge D60s came with pre-93 IIRC. Looks like this:

Internal locking hub is what pretty much every other hub/spindle D60 came with:

Unit bearings are what your XJ has. Sealed bearing that bolts onto the knuckle with a splined hub/flange that presses into it. Most are non-serviceable. Can still have locking hub/drive flanges in some cases (i.e. Ford axles, but not Dodges).
