Should be the same thing. The only thing that might be different would be the ratios from the different size engine. A lot of the Mountaineers had 5.0s in them.

all the same parts. I don't think i've ever seen a mountaineer in the junkyard that didnt have 3.73s and a limited slip.

I believe all 1997-2001 Mercury Mountaineers had 5.0 engines, factory tow package, 3.73 gears with limited slip. The only drive train option was AWD or 2WD. Other gears may have been optional but mine had 3.73s.
Should be a metal tag bolted on the rear end with the codes. At least that is what I recall. Inside of glove box door may have info also.
