Ok here is what i'm running and what I want to accomplish. 98XJ, 3.5in RE, 31's, auto, np231, d30, 8.25, stock 3.55's. I cant decide to ear gear to 4.11 or 4.56's. My XJ is my DD I would like to keep running at 70 mph and not be racing over 3000 RPM's. I do pull some times 2500 lbs max. So 4.11's or 4.56's??

the 4.0 doesnt mind high RPMs. RPMs arent as bad as load. for example... im on 32s with stock 3.07s. i get better highway mileage in 4th gear than i do 5th (manual). basically... 3000RPMs with half throttle is better than running 2200RPMs in 5th with the throttle wide open. see what im saying? RPMs arent your enemy, load is.

but with only 31s... 4.10s might be enough, especially with an auto. if there is EVER the prospect of going bigger on tire size i would do 4.56s right now.

X2 on above! 31's and 4:56 would be a little much. But as said all ready if you plan to go bigger than gear for that. If not. 4:10 would be the way to go.

4.56, especially if theres a chance you might want to jump up in tire size later on. its very rare i hear someone complain about having too much gear.

im "overgeared" according to many with 5.38's and 35's. but still cruises down the highway comfortably, and pulls strong right until the speed governor. i love it. fuel milage doesn't suck either.

I say 4.56's, I run 32's (they are worn and right now are really 30's) and I rev at 2500 at 65 and it cruises nice at 70-75 around 2800. Keep in mind I have a manual transmission so I'm not sure what your final drive is. But I love my 4.56's.

Just FYI: please don't ask the same question in multiple threads. Thanks.

Copy & paste of my reply from that thread:

3.90:1 on 31" tyres would be equivalent to 3.55:1 on factory 28" tyres. Since there's no 3.90:1 gearset available to the best of my knowledge, 4.10:1 is the next jump. You'll actually be about 5% overgeared, but it's not enough that there's any practical downside to it. You'll be fine on 4.10s; 2500 RPM in 4th gear with an AW4 works out to 70mph on 245/75R16s, which have an approximately 30.7" diameter. I've towed at the XJ's limit (5000 lbs.) with that setup without any issues other than the occasional manual shift into third on hills.

I've got 4.56's with 31's right now and i love the pickup. I have an auto and can cruise at 70 veery comfortably all day long.

I also run a 4.56 gear, my DD does about 70 miles a day, I am very happy with what I have even the fuel mileage.

grab some 4 cyl axles.

I regeared my XJ with the intention of going to 31" tires when the 30's wear out. Since June of '08, I spent a total of 3 months in the US so the 30's still have life in them. The chart below is what I get with the 30 inchers GPS verified.

April 10, 2008

RPM’s at 55 MPH with 4.10:1 gears running 30” tires 1980
RPM’s at 60 MPH with 4.10:1 gears running 30” tires 2175
RPM’s at 65 MPH with 4.10:1 gears running 30” tires 2360
RPM’s at 70 MPH with 4.10:1 gears running 30” tires 2550
RPM’s at 75 MPH with 4.10:1 gears running 30” tires 2700
RPM’s at 80 MPH with 4.10:1 gears running 30” tires 2920

Since I will never go above 31 inch tires and 95% highway driven 4.10 gears are perfect for me.
