Winch bumper design

So I was just curious... I recently met a neighbor of mine who just bought a Wrangler and is going to build himself a winch bumper. He said that would help me build one for my XJ. Would anyone be willing to share their design and maybe measurements with me? Thanks all.

Search is our friend, or you can scroll down to the very bottom of this thread where related topics are listed for you automatically.

Design, make sure you use more then the stock 6 bolts. Make the mounts go at least back to the steering box holes and incorporate the d ring holes into the mounts. Heres a little write up I did on mine, it's not a winch bumper but the mounting points are whats important, Im actually going to be modifing it soon to add a winch plate.

Cool thanks.

I searched around and came up with plans for the bumper mounts:

You can cut and mount these to help begin your build. There are tons of threads that show how people built there own bumpers, but few mention the actual dimensions because they build as they go. I'm sure you can do the same, try using cardboard to make mock ups so that you can get an idea of what you like. Then use these pieces as templates to form your steel parts.

The best advice I can give you is to decide exactly what you need as far as recovery points, and whether or not you want a winch. Then select designs from bumpers that you like, and narrow down the results to what you think is feasible to reproduce given your resources.

Cheers

you should be able to buy frame tie in kits on ebay or from places like AJs.
those would be a good starting point as they have all the holes drilled in approximately the right spots.

I've passed out that link a few times over the years and a couple people have told me the front 2 holes are a bit off so check em before you drill. I have NO first hand myself, just pM's

I used these plans and they are slightly off but it's a nice starting point. Cut the shape out of the paper, put it up against the frame and rub over the holes with a pencil. That will give you exact hole locations.
