Will a 96 16" rim fit an 88 ?

Yes. All Cherokees are same bolt pattern and wheels will interchange. Newer GC's have a dif bolt pattern. 06 and older Wranglers have same pattern as Cherokees as well.

Thanks...thought so, but wanted to ask. Gonna have to use the full size spare from my 96 when I go hunting this weekend. The 22 yr old donut I used to get home last weekend has some splitting tread after being used. Besides, a donut wont work too well with 31's....looked bad enough when I had 30's on it as I drove home last weekend.

Definitely the 16" can be used on earlier XJs, not sure if the reverse is true--there might be rotor/caliper clearance issues trying to use the 15" on later models. Not sure, just something to consider.
