Gauges question

I just picked up a 1996 XJ, bone stock, 4.0 AW4. It's the base model, only has two gauges (fuel gauge and speedo) and a bunch of idiot lights.

Problem is...neither gauge works, fuel gauge reads way beyond full, and the speedo doesn't move at all, resting at zero.

Any ideas?

First of all - wow, I grew up in Haverhill.

Second - sounds like your wiring is screwy. I'd bet on a loose ground or a connector loose behind the gauge cluster.

You can install a better cluster from any 91-96 XJ at the boneyard, but you do have to replace the oil pressure sender and coolant temp sender (rear driver side of the head, single wire going to it, I think it's purple) to make the new gauges work. Just pull the senders out of whatever vehicle you get the cluster from.
