well its an 89 im not sure exactly what transmission whats a good way to figure that out. and it only shifts into 3rd and reverse but its really hard. clutch is soft and goes to the floor and has alot of play. when in gear it bogs really bad and usually cuts off. any ideas.

Check fluid level. Does it go in gear when the vehicle is off? Visual check of clutch condition? shifter linkage tight?

Production date through 3-9-89 should be a BA 10/5 POS Peugeot; production date after 3-9-89 should be an AX-15

Novak BA 10/5 info: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/ba10_5.htm

Novak AX15 info: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/ax15.htm

Bogging and cuts off is separate from the clutch issue.

The BA 10/5 does not have yellow-metal synchros and uses gear oil 75-90w.

The AX15 has yellow-metal synchros that will be destroyed by using lubrication with sulfur content, so you need to use a good 10w30 motor oil--I use Mobile-1 10w30 synthetic; MT90; Pennzoil Synchromesh; the hellishly expensive dealer synthetic lubricant.

Your problem could be bad fluid in the hydraulic system. That fluid is brake fluid, and brake fluid is hygroscopic--it draws moisture from the atmosphere, when the moisture content in the fluid becomes too high things will start to fail. flush the system with new brake fluid, see if that helps.

The clutch could be too worn, the flywheel could have been resurfaced in the past and its too far out of spec, the pedal assembly could be worn/damaged--you mentioned "play".

Look up under the dash and see if the backside of the clutch MC is leaking fluid.
