Fuel smell in my 2000 xj sport

I just picked up a 2000 xj sport and I am smelling fuel in the cab while driving. I pulled over and opened the hatch and the smell became worse in the hatch area. Any suggestions on what this could be?

Check the lines to your evap canister, located near the left rear wheel well. Just follow your fuel lines there and check for wet lines for leaks. I believe it may be hidden behind a shield.

Ivan's suggestion is good.

If you don't find anything leaking, take a look at the tailpipe--heavy black buildup, real sooty? Could have a bad o2/CTS/MAT/MAP and running extremely rich.
