Yes I've researched the topic:

I got a 231 out of a 96+ XJ for free and am looking at doing a few cheep upgrades. Top of the list is a JB conversions SYE, since the t-case was a failed hack n tap. Next on the list is a wide chain and 6 planetary gear conversion.
Since I'm looking to do this cheep, I'll be getting the needed parts out of the JY. Since I'm cheep, I'd like to eliminate buying as many transfer cases as possible. Don't worry, the money saved on buying only one case, is being spent on a full rebuild. So by process of elimination, this leaves me with trying to find the NP231C with the 1.25 wide chain and 6 pinion planetary set.

Here comes the questions: The most specific info I've been able to find on the 231c is "from an S-10, forget the year, early-mid 90's I think." anyone be able to give me anything more specific?

Also, it seems that all the write ups I've found involve using a pre 96 231J case with a 241 planetary set because "Somewhere between '93 and '98, the gear cut changed, so the six pinion planetary I had procured would not mesh correctly with the gear in the '98 case." Does anyone know if the 231C from the "early-mid 90's S-10" planetarys will work in the 96+ 231J?

Also, if you go to a you-pull-it, gut the cases and take the parts you need instead of buying the whole case. I guarantee you will pay less.

Not at the ones around here, if you gut an axle, t-case, etc, they will charge you the whole price since what you left behind isn't sellable as far as they are concerned.
