Q: Starter issues

Having issues starting the Jeep, The starter is engaging the fly wheel, but is unable to turn it. We have tried a new starter and put a new battery in the Jeep to no avail. We even tried jumping it with my friends F150.

Any suggestions of what to look at next?

Well, could be cables won't carry the load, or the engine has hydraulic/seized.

Do a voltage drop test across the main cables--assuming you have already cleaned them, both ends each?

After that, pull the spark plugs and see if she will crank that way.

How did this problem first present itself?

This is our Jeepspeed Rig, and we need to rewire it, because we think that could be the issue. We had a no-spark cranking issue last week and replaced the CAM sensor, CPS and ECU. It started ok all week, Wednesday evening it was a little hesitant to turn over, and then last night all we get it the starter attempting to turn the flywheel.
The motor turns by hand from the harmonic balancer.

We are out of the race at this point, and need to head up to contingency to set up the JS guys for NAXJA!

Also check your grounds on the block.

Brendan,

As Joe Peters outlined above; check the resistance of both battery cables to ensure you have low resistance in the cable and providing proper amperage to the starter.

Better to measure as voltage drop. You can have major cable corrosion under the sheath but a couple of good strands and you will measure zero resistance.

Nice article on the test: http://www.aa1car.com/library/voltage_drop_testing.htm
