Neutral Safety Switch Adjustment?

Replacing this item on my '93 Cherokee 'Country'. Removed the old one, and ready to install the new one. Need some guidance on adjusting it.
In the Chilton's book, it says to "disconnect the shift linkage rod from the shift lever at the transmission, then rotate the shift lever all the way rearward, then forward 2 detent positions to N". Can someone explain this to a novice? Any help will be tremendously appreciated!!
