How do I get the rear bumper end caps off? The bolt on the top thats encased .It just spins and theres no way to hold the top half still when turning the nut.How can I get it off without damaging the caps?

I got a wrench on the nut on my '88. I ended up sitting on the ground, reaching through something and finally got a small crescent wrench on it- with the torx socket underneath. It was either really rusty, self-locking, or both because it was a real pain- never loosened up until it was all the way off.

Good luck

Theres a nut on one end and nothing to grab onto on the other end. There is a little hole on the one end ,but no allen or torx so you can hold it .

Even if you pull the bolts and nuts off that are visible you won't be able to remove the end caps without possible damage... the end cap has a molded stem with a push nut holding the end cap on in the inside..

I haven't found a way to remove the push nuts without pulling the entire bumper off.

When I got my '96 (back in January) it had a damaged l/h end cap - one of the reasons I manage to knock the p.o. down £150 (about, $175, at the time) It now seems my original assessment was right & I have to remove the whole bumper BUT that also means I'l have to do the same to any wreck that I might find (so far, only 2 - right colour, wrong year!).

The bumper also has a small (egg sized?) dent & a few (primer deep) scratches in it, so maybe the answer's to replace the whole lot! Mind you finding one's another matter, even at a premium price from a specialist dismantler.

An alternative is to leave this 'til next year when, with any luck, I'll be Stateside for a couple of weeks in May - so if anyone's got a good l/h end cap, preferably in dark green, within, say, 500 miles of Phoenix, Az (any excuse to go off on a little road trip - even in a rental car!) let me know -& hang onto it.
