How can I tell from looking at the rear end the differance between a D44 and a D35 also Is an XJ safe on the highway with a 6 inch lift or would you guys recomend staying with a 4 1/2 inch Max ??

A 4.5" with 35's and cut fenders looks cooler than 6" and 33's with OE flares.

1. A D44 cover looks like an apple laying on its side.

2. The D35 is oval, flat bottom on the housing, and if you at the front the pinion extension looks like it has a rhino nose.

As to the lift. There are a lot of issues involved--how you drive, what lift you use, the type of driving. I recommend you stop by the Modified Tech forum and SEARCH first, then if you don't get a clear enough answer post there in modified. Personally, if I was going 6" I would only do so with a long-arm setup.
