Thanks lawsoncl & co, I found the problem using the wiring diagram and the troubleshooting linked to in someone elses thread.
The resistance readings were 4.5 ohms instaed of the 11-15 given in the troubleshooting.
I found this was caused by the backlit switches needing a ground connection to light up, disconnected the ground leads and problem solved.
I had only disconnected the power feeds when checking, not the ground etc.

PS I've now got to change the Torque COnv switch to a 3 position so I can control it again because I'd forgotten how annoying it is when in top gear and it drops the revs too low.
