Idle problem

my 89' cherokee seems to misfire or partially stall out while driving. I'm also getting a cranking sound from one of the cylinders while running. Any suggestions?

First step in diagnostics should be to pull out the spark plugs. Keep them in order from front to rear and note the condition of each one. White, tan, black, oily? All the same? Check the gap. While they are out, do a compression check. This is thoroughly explained in one of the current front page threads.
