With the control lever in Vent;

While driving maybe 40-60 mph, part throttle or accelerating, the air output stops coming from the vents and starts coming from the defrost/windshield.

Then, when lifting off throttle it shifts back to the vents.

I'm thinking some sort of vacume problem?

ummm... yeah, check and make sure the vacuum canister is attached, also find the little in line disc looking thing (check valve) and make sure it works.

Agree, the default vent position is defrost when there is insufficient vacuum.

Reservoir behind the bumper, passenger's side. The hard vacuum line likes to break around the battery's area.
