odd rotational brake? clunk

ok, so today on my way into work i started getting a thump in the rear. it's definitely linked to wheel rotation, only occurs at low speed, and only when on the brakes. usually the last few wheel rotations before a full stop. i'm thinking rear brakes, as they've just started to squeak a little, but only sometimes, and there's plenty of evidence that my jeep sat for quite a while before i got it. what's throwing me is that it really sounds for all the world like it's coming from closer to the middle rather than a wheel. anybody have any good ideas?

stock 95XJ, 4.0+AW4+NP231, D30/C8.25, much work to do...

New to you XJ--put it up on stands, pull the wheels and drums, inspect/service rear brakes; then inspect/service the front brakes.

There's another thread going right now with some good ideas you may want to look at:

'Rear brakes only last a few hundred miles before pulsing!'

Sound exactly like your problem.
