Input shaft swap i need HUGE help

Ok, so this is the story, I have a 96 cherokee 4.0 ho auto, it had a np242 it went out, so i went and bought a 87 np231 for $60 figure out the input splines are 21 and mine is 23. so i went and found a 2002 242j for $75 correct spline count and swapped it in and the shifter is all wrong cant figure out which way is 4x4 or 2wheel. So my question is now can I take the input shaft out of the 242j or np242 if not damage and swap it into the np231. Cause the 242j is not workin and i have no speedo now and the rubber deal on the out put shaft got ate up and it leaks. now i have really no more money for t-case's so if any of you guys know if i can swap the input shafts around it would be great.

No,the early input gear has a different gear cut(pitch) and will not interchange.

well crap that sucks, that means my jeep is down for the cont at least till not month.

Yes there are 91+ are 23-spline.

I have an NP231 out of a 96 with 23 splines, i had to get the t-case after i swapped a 96 tranny into my 89

well i guess i will have to keep on looking
