Who has a 98 XJ with a factory owners manual that could tell me the towing capcity? I've tried google but I got 5000lbs and 2000lbs so. who knows:sure:

5000lbs if it has a 4.0liter motor.
10000lbs if it has a 4.7liter stroker
12000lbs if it has Nitrous.
10000lbs if it has a 4.7liter stroker

I believe those numbers are correct. The 5000lb rating only applies if the XJ has the factory trailer tow package which includes 4.0L engine, optional rear 3.73 gears, larger radiator, auxiliary tranny cooler and upgraded suspension along with requiring brakes on the towed load (trailer). There may be some other items included in the tow package as well. Some people think that if the vehicle has a hitch, then it has the tow package........NOT.
