Determining the year of my 8.25

I've got Chrysler 8.25 andI am trying to determine if it's 27 or 29 spline. Is there a way to find out without popping the diff cover off? I've got the numbers off of the axle. Is there a website that I can run the numbers on? Not sure what it came out of except that it was an XJ. There is no tag on the diff cover. I've checked the forums and the internet and I'm coming up empty. Thanks in advance.

as far as i know, they both look identical on the outside. pull an axle and start counting

My jeep is an 89 but it is unknown what year it came out of. I bought it from a junk yard a few years back and didn't think to ask what it came out of.

Then the only way to know is to pull the cover and count.

my vote is its a 27spline..

Reason: You got it from a J/y a few years ago, well a few years ago the 97+ were rarely seen in J/ys.. and while it COULD be a 29spline from a 96.5+ i still doubt this..
