Major Issue and 1000 miles from home...

NAXJA Forum User
Well we took a trip to Vegas from Denver the long route due to the rock slide on 70... Trip went without a hitch until we got off the highway on arrival.... I have no idea where its coming from but its from the rear of the jeep, when In gear and under acceleration the noise is not there when I let off the accelerator there is a humming noise almost like brakes being metal on metal. I replaced all my brakes before the trip and when braking it does not get better or worse. So I'm counting out the brakes. Its really weird that it only happens when not accelerating, it is noticeable when the clutch is in as well. Diff fluid was done 20k miles ago and tranny and t case fluid I did this winter. Drive shaft does not have any play and the front shaft I just rebuilt as well.

What in the hell could it be? I'm going to check all my fluids tomorrow. Seems as if its coming from the rear diff...weird it only happens when letting off the accelerator.

Anyone have a place to suggest to take it to in Vegas? I need to make it back home by Sunday and have others depending on me too..... this is a really shitty situation that I do not want to lead to us getting stranded on the side of the high way.

What a damper on the trip upon arrival

Suggestions to look at?

Shops to take it to????

Year? ETC.?

--------
Might try jacking up rear wheel, one at a time, spin by hand to check brakes. They just go bad sometimes.
Check fluids.

Good Luck,
Orange

will do tomorrow

sorry....

90 xj 2 door
4wd
220k on drive train, newer 4.0 motor
4+inch lift w32/s

Gears are aftermarket... not sure the ratio, but I go 67 when speedo reads 75 with 33x1250's, not sure what the fellow had put in it.

some other stuff to list... not really relavent

I'm really worried it may be a diff issue however... its not a whine..more of a grind almost... I can't risk this on the trip home

anyone have a suggested 4x4 shop in Vegas?

Sounds like something's coming loose in the rear diff. Bearings? Tcase is also torque sensitive- could make noise on decel. Check fluids in both for metal.

It could be anything from a wheel bearing to a pebble wedged between moving parts? from what you describe I would bet on something wrong in the rear diff!
Does the noise lessen when you touch the brakes? That would indicate a wheel bearing going bad.
I once had a similar noise on a Ford Bronco I owned years back drive me crazy, a buddie figured it out, It was a pebble rolling around in the drivers front wheel trim ring.
Good luck

Yeah I'm leaning toward internal diff issues...
to answer questions

it does not get better or worse with brakes... I'm almost positive its not a bearing issue...but will check and have it checked, due to the location of the hum it is def from the rear axle.

Now that I look back on it when we pulled into our last fuel stop my rear end locked up right after hitting the brakes to slow down to turn into the station... I though I clipped a low pole at first... got out and looked and nothing around the car... really weird and kind of shrugged it off and I figured it was the brakes freezing up after 400 miles of not being touched and solid snow and ice... I pulled forward and it was like nothing happened. It was not making this noise at the station... now I'm wondering if something snapped inside and f'd internals up...either way it needs to be fixed before Saturday night and I really hope there is a shop out here that can do so....

I have done all my own work on it so far but have never messed with setting gears or diff work.....my knowledge is not sufficient enough to set the spacing correctly

ya sounds like something came loose in ur diff possibly. i had a couple bolts come out of my ring gear on my ranger a while back, one wedged against my diff cover poked a little crack into it which caused my rear to kind of lock up. u may have something like that but urs may have hit the actual housing so you have no hole to see. mine backed out because i forgot to put thread locker on all the bolts when installing

I'll see tomorrow... I havea small tool kit out here.... if I were at home it would be different

Why not just pop the cover and look. If nothing wrong OK, If toast pull the drive shaft and drive home Front wheel drive.

I considered that.... but I 70w/snow in 2wd is asking for a wreck...and I have not had time to pull the vacuum disco out and do a solid axle since it decides to click in and out time to time

Roar on coast sounds like a rear end problem. Easy thing to check is the pinion nut. Crawl under it and see if the yoke on the axle is loose. Other then that pop the cover and check for bearing cap bolts.

Probably not an option since it's a '90 which doesn't have the sealed output unless the rear shaft is in.

And since you mentioned clutch I can only assume you have a 5 speed which in turn makes me assume you use your e-brake. If it sounds like it could be brakes but nothing changes while braking could something to do with the e-brakes have got sloppy and your shoes are dragging a bit and not being held in properly?

Mountain dew or said beverage bottle an dduck tape and you are good to go in front wheel drive. He also said his disconnect is scetchy, but that is an equally easy fix.

Sorry, good point. I wouldn't know, beer doesn't come in plastic bottles :gee:

Edit: Oh and reading through a couple posts that I somehow missed, x2 on pinion nut, I had that problem once and was on REAL short time so I just said screw it and replaced the whole axle instead of spending time figuring out what was wrong. Then after I was done working I grabbed the yoke for some reason and found out it was loose. Oh well... I just found out last weekend that I had replaced it with a 29-spline axle so it was worth it :laugh3:
