Just finished my swap going from a renix to a 97 4.0, went to put the belt back on and go figure...neither of them fit (yes i have it routed correctely). The belt for the 97 is WAY to small, and the belt for the renix is about 4-5 inches to big. Anyone else have this issue? Can I just get a belt thats 4-5 inches shorter and slap it on?
Thanks

Would it hurt anything to find the right belt for this setup and go with it.

Are you serious?

If he did that cats and dogs would start sleeping together, and it would be the end of the World as we know it!

Actually, on second thought, why not?

As long as everything is spinning in the right (correct) direction, size the belt to fit. Beware, some earlier XJ's had water pumps that worked in the "reverse" direction, from what I remember.

I thought all of the serpentine belt 4.0s were reverse?

A decent auto supply place will have a list of belts by length. As said above, check the P.S. pump adjustment. Also allow for some stretch for the new belt, don't buy the longest one that will fit when new.
Oh, and length has little to do with cost as I found out. An inch shorter or longer can more than double the price, so if the price is seems too high, check others that will also fit.

You ain't lying, the Cadillac and Jeep belts are identical in every way except the Cadillac belts cost 3x.

To the OP, run the tensioner all the way out and then run a tape measure around the pulleys to get a starting length. You want a belt that is going to be the same length or just an inch or two shorter--it WILL stretch after it is run for a couple of minutes. Also if you don't damage the belt most shops will let you exchange.

This might help some.....(Gates #'s)
