rear quarter trimming?

So I installed a lift of my jeep this past weekend and needed to do some trimming of the fenders. The front was done no problem but, the rear I'm kinda lost on. How I had marked it was I drew a line around the fender flares and started cutting. On the rear I understand that I need to push the inner fender up and tack weld it back to the sheet metal on the body. The part that I'm kinda lost on is do I take what I have trimmed off from the "fender liner" part, bang it back up and tack? Or do I just leave the outer sheet metal on, bang it up and tack? Any guidance would be appreciated on this and if anyone has pictures from their trimming it would be greatly appreciated.

Little info on the XJ, it's a two door 88 with a 3.5 in lift with drop brackets and I have 33's on it. I did the search thing and didn't come up with anything.:badpc:

sometimes the search on here is a little picky. try going on google and type in what you want, plus "naxja"

i think your are confusing the two methods for rear trimming. the easy method for the rear is you want to cut between the pinch welds and hammer each individual tab up into the well. or this second method is, if you can weld that sheetmetal you can cut as high as you want and weld it back together. theres plenty more writeups and threads on the topic besides the ones i listed

i was looking at a write up the other day that was a 2 door ill see if i can find it cause it had great pics. but i think the guy drilled out the spot weld cut the shape then bent the inner fender up and re welded. he did have to cut and patch the inner fender. you could also cut your wheel well out and make your own i saw a good thread on that too. i have been looking for a 2door cause you can cut more.

I have another question about this, how is that actually structurely integral?(sp?) It looks like I'm gonna be in for quite a bit of work.

If you have already cut the rear above the factory fender flares, (it sounds like you have, but not sure), you need to go back in with additional sheet metal and fill in the gap. Its not 'easy', but its definitely doable. I have done a coupe of them now, here is a decent picture show of what I did on mine.

Thanks for that Stump, that's probably what I'll ultimatly have to do. Is there a reason you didn't drill out the spot welds and push the inner fender up and weld it that way? It looks easier doing it that way but I don't think I will be able to find sheet metal like that up here.

Cause it looks like crap to me... :D Imho, this is the correct way to do it. Sure, the cut and fold works, but ???? Just a personal preference really.....

Not sure what part of AK you're in, but I would be willing to bet you can find a couple strips of 18 gauge steel...

Good luck!
